Instrument Cluster

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.
If you really want me to feel at home, then "55" needs to be red. (grin) I know I've joked about this before, but how cool would it be if you could select "retro" on the speedometer options and have the needle waver around the speed of travel. (Too far?) I am liking everything about this Scout.

As far as the new CarPlay system goes, Apple’s instrument cluster design tools are intended to allow user customization, and this was demostrated in a WWDC video. The vehicle manufacturer has very tight control over the options they expose to the user. So the available customizability options can be kept well within regulatory requirements and the manufacturers design style. The user may be able to select between certain color choices that have been pre-approved, or change between a few different styles of gauges, or add certain elements that are sent from their phone, such as driving directions or weather conditions or now playing.

Although ostensibly part of CarPlay, the gage clusters designed with the helps of Apple’s tools and collaboration are loaded onto and rendered by the vehicle’s own computer - this appranetly satisfies regulatory real-time OS requirements so that the speed shown on the gage is always accurate as of that moment.

I’m really hoping Scout support it because the new CarPlay would make adding limited customizability to the gauge cluster very easy, because all the graphical elements are variable.
It would be pretty awesome for SM to do the CarPlay cluster integration. There are a few high-end companies that keep claiming they are working on the integration. Could you imagine if SM beat them all to market? 😄

Porsche and Aston Martin expected to be among the first, Land Rover, Lincoln, Audi, Volvo, Honda, Nissan, Ford, Jaguar, Acura, Polestar, Infiniti, Renault are all reported to be on-board with aspects of the new CarPlay features. Scout will see how it is received before their vehicles roll off the line.

I think it might be the opposite to what most people think - adding some CarPlay stuff to other displays (such as maps in the instrument cluster) could actually free up the main touchscreen display so that the native Scout system there could be used more frequently. I think it is very important to have a physical toggle switch that just switches the main touchscreen between the car’s native system and the connected device.

I think it would be really cool if the needle behaved with the physics of a real analog gauge. For example, when you start up the vehicle the needle could be resting way down below the gauge and then jump up into position at 0 mph. it could also have a bit of a vibration. Whimsical details like this add personality.

Would like to see pitch and roll gauges in an offroad screen mode.
Off road definitely needs it's own instrument cluster.

Here's an idea - there should be the number of degrees the steering is turned right or left of dead straight. There's often someone outside trying to direct the driver how to steer and the communications are very imprecise. The person outside should be able to say "passenger 3" to get the driver to turn 3 degrees and then "2 more" or "back 1" etc. Maybe this already exists of other vehicles?

Not to the level of precision you're asking for, but the LR3 shows the angle of the front steering in the off-road/nav display area.

This is why I thought it would be cool to have the ability to connect up to 6 cameras to the in-cab display. Then put magnetic mount cameras to watch whatever you want Down low for each tire. On the roof for the rack. Underneath for skid plates/Traveler motor. Put them in place when you want and remove them when you don't need them. Total flexibility.

That’s a cool idea… I wonder what kind of effort it takes to create that sort of effect. That’s for someone who has experience working with haptics and real-time graphics generation, maybe like a game developer? The easy way would be to make one animation or a few animated sequences that randomly play at startup. 🤔

That looks great! If it’s not already being considered, If I may suggest. As the needle moves to indicate speed, could we make the speed number font increase in size ? For example, when the needle is at 10, 20, 30, or 40, the font could be a bit bigger.
That’s not a bad idea…I like this!

I was thinking the exact same thing. Having it in a head up display is also very beneficial

Now that's thinking outside the box! It's funny, but little trick things are what can really make a difference to buyers.
