Scout concepts on Jay Leno’s Garage

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.
The tow capacity with the Harvester is wildly disappointing to me. I was hoping to be able to use the Terra like a truck. I have a boat and a light duty tractor I haul around. If the 5,000 lbs tow capacity with the Harvester is accurate then there is absolutely no way this vehicle is going to work for me. I hope we get more clarification on it soon. But if this is correct I will sadly have to cancel my reservation.
Isn’t Terra guesstimated at 7K though? I think it’s Traveler that’s at 5.

This is all also two years away. I am a little concerned though that folks are excited right now because all things seem possible and each person has their dream configuration…but it’s not feasible for the Scouts to be all things to all people- over featured for some, under featured for others, too off-road for some and not enough for others. I’d be happy with a 2K tow capacity and a 600 mile pure electric drivetrain. Harvester adds maintenance and complexity and only having 150m of electric range increases overall energy costs and reduces value proposition. I’m very used to having 400 mile pure electric range and an energy cost of about two cents a mile…going backwards to 350 pure electric range is the wrong direction…I pretty frequently use my 400 electric range (everyone likes to talk about average driver only driving 30-40 miles a day but I’m wondering if this crowd leans towards longer weekend trips or use cases than a sedan crowd does). So Harvester is my only option if I want a Scout and other potential benefits of the Scout over what I have now. At least for now it looks like 600m pure electric range isn’t on the table, lol, and I’ve decided I’m willing to give up aspects of my dream configuration to gain other desired characteristics. Of course I hope in the next two years that the pure electric range range increases. But I had canceled my cybertruck reservation because, well, Musk has become a lunatic, but also that it’s just not what I’d hoped for.

I’m wondering though if it’s possible to reduce the weight of your trailer…in any event helps with range…exchanging wood or steel with aluminum, etc? I hope things end up in your “It works” column! Scott K comes across to me as being a more realistic and experienced CEO than what I’m used to. So that’s going in our favor over what some of us are used to but I’d urge patience…waiting for a pre production vehicle is hard.

In regards to Leno..... He drove a Tesla into his place that morning. He is not against EV's and keeps an open mind to all vehicle technology.

His collection is lacking trucks. Didn't see the Cyclone when I was there but doesn't mean he doesn't have a collection of trucks. Majority I observed were cars and motorcycles.

He is by far the most famous celebrity I met, and I would say he was super down to earth. Car guy through and through. Sat down with at lunch and just talked shop. Great guy all around.

In regards to towing with 1/2 ton trucks.....

1/2 ton trucks now a days are not built with towing in mind, let's be honest. They are built with suspensions that are cushy and appeal to the daily pavement pounder that wants a truck. Not that they can't tow a small boat, 2 place snowmobile trailer, or small utility trailer. But if you are getting up towards a 10K camper or trailer you should be looking at a 3/4 ton. Safer for one.

Hence the reason I drive a Cummins.

Numbers are not final for us. Let's wait and see.

@CP1@scoutmotors thanks for joining in our conversations and shedding light on topics from your point of view. Good to hear/read other SM thoughts and knowledge of the vehicles

A properly equipped 1/2 ton diesel truck equipped with the towing package (additional cooling capacity, upgraded shocks, brakes and rear differential) will give you the capacity to tow up to 10,000lbs. Just be sure to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. We tow a 16ft steel horse trailer with 2 1,200lbs horses without any issues.

I believe most folks interpreted from the Leno video that the 5k towing capacity is for both Traveller and Terra. My guess is SM will be over 400 by launch.

My apologies. 😑 I’ll keep such opinions to myself.

Diesels typically have lower horsepower, higher torque ratings than gas…better for towing. I wouldn’t think a half ton gas truck would have same capability as a diesel counterpart.

I guess everyone is gonna ignore the fact that he listened in on meeting about the guy that was retiring from the late night show. So that he could take over their spot.

Other than that he’s a pretty chill guy.
Please don't change. This is what makes the community interesting.
Well, you gotta know when to hold ‘em and know when to fold ‘em. I didn’t, uh, really think about the consequences of dropping a verbal deuce on Mr. Leno. Nope. No, I did not. Goodbye for the rest of this thread! You can find me in another thread where I am less embarrassed about having shamed myself and my parents in front of a company employee. 🚪🫣

For most vehicles that offer both gas and diesel, the tow ratings are frequently remarkably similar. This is because other chassis factors matter much more to the rating than the actual powerplant, like brakes, axle load ratings, suspension ratings, and etc. Having said that, the diesel in my Grand Cherokee gives me peace of mind when towing because I know that torque will get me out of a jam that a gas powerplant might not overcome. And that's why my next tow vehicle will be Range Extended electric. I've been waiting since the advent of modern electric vehicles for someone to produce a proper Series Hybrid and suddenly I've got multiple options coming onto the market. I want to go Scout very badly, so please come through on the towing. I need at least 7500 pounds, and 8500 would be a nice bump, or I'll have to stay in the Stellantis family.
