Scout concepts on Jay Leno’s Garage

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.
Most hand built concept vehicles have no drivetrain and rarely if ever do car companies let anyone drive them. I personally think there is nothing more Scout than us saying, yes, it is way early, but if Jay Leno wants to drive it, let's do it. We've done more with these fragile concept vehicles than most any car company would ever do and we're just getting started.

As for real prototypes, we just wrapped up a round of winter testing and it is amazing to see them ripping around an ice lake skid pad roosting snow sideways. Hopefully we can share some of that soon.
I can’t wait for all the videos to come out. Each one ends up being better than the last.

HOPEFULLY?!

You can’t just tease us like this and not follow through!

The tow capacity with the Harvester is wildly disappointing to me. I was hoping to be able to use the Terra like a truck. I have a boat and a light duty tractor I haul around. If the 5,000 lbs tow capacity with the Harvester is accurate then there is absolutely no way this vehicle is going to work for me. I hope we get more clarification on it soon. But if this is correct I will sadly have to cancel my reservation.

Welcome!

Jamie has said a few times now, all numbers are still fluid and are being optimized.

I was a little worried too, but my tractor is about 1500lbs (JD 1025r), and even with the wheel weights and some attachments I doubt I go much beyond 2000. My boat weighs nothing, and other trailers / loads (mostly lumber or garbage) are easily within range.

As long as 5000lbs is accurate I should be OK. I know there are some big camper trailers that are pushing 10k and that might be a problem for some glampers out there.

I know spec's are fluid and we should all wait until things are figured out but if the Terra Harvester does end up with a towing capacity of 5k it would be the lowest towing capacity of any half ton size truck in the US market. I wonder how many of the 50,000 + folks who have reserved a Harvester generator plan to tow? Is it enough to push SM to go with a bigger ICE engine on the Harvester?

I think, based on other posts on this topic it’s not the engine that’s the limiting factor-it’s the tongue weight and general vehicle weight that allows successful towing at a heavier weight.

Good point but if it was tongue weight only you would think he would have added 500 lb tongue weight capacity to the 5,000 pound towing capacity statment but maybe Scott's not a big RV Trailer towing kind of guy.

Honest question. What do you tow them with now? Is it really a 1/2 ton SUV?

Here is the link. Goes live today…

@ScoutMotors The discussion following the towing limits mentioned in the Jay Leno video has me thinking more generally about towing with the Traveler Harvester that we have reserved. Especially about regenerative braking and UI to help us manage it.

We do over 10,000 towing miles a year with a 4300 lb travel trailer. Our ICE tow vehicle has a 10 speed automatic transmission, we use manual downshifting to control downhill speed. We can go down a 6% grade without touching the brakes, an 8% grade with not much use of the brakes. We are totally confident that the engine braking will work reliably and predictably, short of a major engine failure.

It would be a tremendous boon if the Scout had UI to display the readiness of regenerative braking as we approached a major grade. Is the battery at a point in its charge curve to absorb the brake output? I imagine we will be able to set a charging limit on the generator to ensure this. Is heat going to be an issue? Should we slow down on the uphill part to reduce heating? Stop in a truck brake area at the top of the grade? How are things holding up on the way down? Do we need to stop for a bit?

I watched the video yesterday and thought it was fine. I thought the comments amounted to whining and bellyaching. I am not the target demographic, but if anything put me off and made me absolutely definitely excited to see what was coming down the line, it was Jay Leno, who I think is obnoxious, being whiny about electric cars not being to his tastes and preferences as an old man of ever-declining relevance in the world. Welcome to the future, bud. I want to own this way more than I want to own a Subaru Outback or a car that Jay Leno wants to drive.

It’s the Car Guy in him that makes him like that, only thing that was good is that he wasn’t one sided. He wanted to learn about it. If you bring that to my grandpa I’m pretty sure he would spit on it. God i can’t wait to roll up to their house when i get my Scout.

Im not fond on Full EV’s my self but unlike him i enjoy the technology and whats to come with them. But on the other hand, i’m a mechanic most vehicles that come in are Gas, with out gas mechanic shops would be out of business.

You clearly don't follow Leno. He's driven a Tesla model S plaid for a couple of years. He owns a Rolls-Royce Spectre EV. Jay has spoken many times about ICE and BEV cars being able to co-exist. He does favor cars over trucks (although he does have a GMC Syclone).

Getting closer to production, I hope that towing is nailed down better. I live at 6500 ft. and have to travel up and over passes to get anywhere from our town. Going west to Utah is the only slight grade but some killer hills. I want to be able to tow a RV so hopefully power drop is not to bad and capacity stays around 5000.
Going down you’ll gain range. Going down Beartooth Highway I gained about 40m of range.

Yes. You're right, but he also knows full well what 350 miles of PURE EV range will get you without the Harvester. That is better performance, one less subsystem and better towing (albeit better for more local/regional towing than long-haul towing). If constant long-range towing is what you are after, I would still opt for a diesel at this stage over any EV. And, if long haul towing were my business, for example, it would absolutely be a diesel. For me personally, I only tow a boat from time to time locally. An EV truck is excellent for this purpose. I believe that Leno's insinuations about the Harvester were targeted very specifically toward the audience that is new to EV's and aren't ready to take the full leap, or for the edge cases (like overnight camping in the desert). If he bought a new Scout, he wouldn't have any "range anxiety' with 350 miles of pure BEV range - particularly after owning a Tesla. I think he was selling the "concept" of the Harvester to the Harvester demographic, and explaining the EREV concept in general to the audience for that segment.

Where does Jay Leno live? California. He has more charging infrastructure surrounding him than almost anywhere else in the country. For daily driving, range anxiety isn't a thing anyway - even with just 150 miles of PURE BEV range most people would never drive that distance daily.

"CA is home to 16,884 EV charging stations that hold a total of 50,416 EV chargers. That's 24% of all EV charging stations and 25% of EV charging ports in the United States. No other state comes close to matching that amount of EV charging infrastructure. - Feb 10, 2025"

My understanding is it’s related to how much pressure is on the steering axle - this is a function of tongue weight, vehicle length (maybe specifically how far the steering axle is from the hitch itself), and vehicle weight distribution.

Putting an engine up front under the hood is one of the simple ways of adding more pressure to the steering axle. See: 3/4 and 1-ton diesel trucks.

This is also part of why fifth wheels can load up so much heavier, because the mounting point is in front of the rear axle.
I’ve been thinking reading posts that it might be as simple as buy the truck version if a higher tow capacity is needed/wanted. I’d love to ditch the frunk for more battery though that might not go over in crash test ratings, lol.

That is correct: I don’t follow him because I don’t like him. He is unappealing to me. He even shows my most preferred type of car content (cars in action with pretty detailed feature overviews), but I’ve pretty much always thought he was a turd and I haven’t mellowed on that opinion. If I do watch car content on YouTube (and I generally don’t), it is definitely not ever his.

Someone on Reddit made the most perfect comment of “When you bring up EV, suddenly everyone is a long trip flatbed trailer hauler” and that nailed it.
