Ev or not to Ev

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

With the many comments in this Scout community about the disgust of the “New” product being totally electric and not being at the least a Hybrid …

How much of the decision to go this direction was more or less forced on by the govt groups that are pushing the gas vehicles out currently?

Curious why you ask? Curious why it matters? The company made a decision and starting government debates seems like an endless circle of name calling from one side of the fence or the other.
A comment was made earlier today that many if not all of us own a cordless drill with a battery. When it came out do you think the first question was whether government influenced it?
Technologies grow and advance. So long as others offer ICE or Hybrid or hydrogen or biodiesel there are always options. And there are still resto companies willing to rebuild a classic Scout with probably any power source listed above. It’s great having choices for vehicles including passenger cars, SUVs and trucks. Hopefully convertible(s) as well-and knowing you generally can choose whatever color choice you prefer within a reasonable range

It was asked as a concern since many have voiced that they don’t want them total EV.

The govt part of the question is because of the push to go that direction and could be the deciding influence by way of regulations, taxation etc….

As for the comparison to “cordless drills” that is like the old saying “apples to oranges” it doesn’t even apply. The choice of buying and or use of a “cordless” over a “corded” drill is mostly for convenience. You won’t see a person stuck in a traffic jam or snow bank worrying about how much longer their “cordless” drill will keep them alive and get them to their destination.

I would say the cordless drill is very much a metaphor and goes beyond convenience. It permits flexibility to get to more places with ease, lack of cord makes for a safer situation. Can go to a job site prior to having power at said location permitting things to continue growing and moving forward. Generally speaking, electric/cordless allows it to operate anywhere and instantly and doesn’t require extra components beyond the battery to be drug along unlike extension cords on a traditional drill in order to allow it to operate.
As for life or death in a snow bank, the same risk can be said of an ICE vehicle or other power configuration-Typically that’s why I keep a few blankets and a couple bottles of water in my car during the winter months.

As for SM direction, a lot has been spoken already (many threads to be read if you haven’t) as to why they are moving forward as EV. One of the primary statements is Scout/iH basically lead the way to modern day SUV’s as we see /use them now and this new venture should be done in the same way and create the next big step in SUV and off road/lifestyle vehicles. Acura took the same approach with the NSX-first real Japanese super car in the 80’s and 30-ish years later introducing a hybrid super car and current development for one of the first all electric super cars. All of which are to be daily drivers and not just track or museum pieces as many other super cars are. Either way -Scout has discussed their intentions and our best opportunity in this forum is to help them advance the design process to make the best SUV possible that gives everyone a sold base vehicle/platform to build on and create their individual perfect vehicle, whether a daily driver with Scout heritage, beachcomber, rock crawler, AWD convertible or winter warrior.
If we all take the time on the forum to offer ways to make the vehicle the best it can be our ideas get shared with the SM design and engineering teams the more likely we are to see a fantastic new vehicle. Spending time questioning company decisions that are already made seems to just slow the opportunities to succeed. Everyone certainly has the opportunity to express their thoughts on this awesome forum but questioning why an EV is Scout’s direction is like asking a school teacher why there is homework-it is what it is and will not change. Better to move forward then to live in the past-JMHO

Well you’re still bringing in this cordless drill thing which is still absurd. It’s nice to see advances in technology I’ll say that but until there is a more economical way to recharge the EV’s that’s also less of an environmental issue this can’t be it.

As for opinions or answers on my original question, it was aimed at any of the officials that might be following this forum. Not to start another back and forth bickering over personal opinions.

I’m going to give you the real insight on why this vehicle is going to be an ev. It has nothing to do with government and it has nothing to do with policy or political correctness or some crazy cordless drill adjenda….the simple answer is money.

If you really look at how long development takes and how long everything moves you will see this is a response to Tesla. Teslas disrupted the market and people are flocking to electric vehicles. The simple TRUTH 8/ that people like electric cars.

The people over at VW recognize that their SUVs are not hugely popular in the US market….not saying they are un-popular….they just aren’t the top sellers

The smart people in VW recognized an opening. The US is craving a larger SUV….and the US market has a huge demand for EVs….the problem is that the US market is very different from the EU or other markets and therefore require different kinds of vehicles. Instead of making yet another VW SUV that will be ok for the market they are instead thinking about re-vitalizing a “purely American brand” so it will be an American truck for Americans…..and to ride the wave of EV mania it will be an EV.

This is plain and simple. They aren’t making a car brand to save the world or appease some Illuminati plot to force everybody into EVs….they are simply following the money and right now EV trucks/SUVs are a big gap in the American market that they are trying to exploit

Thanks for getting to the point on this. I like your directness and agree whole heartedly. We’ve both been on here long enough to understand the premise and direction SM is taking this and being involved will make it that much better. Ashame VW quit sending the Touareg to the US. That was the one larger-ish SUV they made that I think Americans liked and bought into but pricing took away sales from Audi and Porsche when they started pushing SUV’s so they killed it here.
For the record I was just entertaining myself talking about drills 😂😂😂.
