Where are EV chargers needed

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

    Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

Are not the Superchargers being reprogremed to accept other brands such as Ford, GMC, VW and perhaps Scout?
See Number 3 - they are only a subset of all TESLA chargers at this point. I can charge my R1T at these locations (noted in the TESLA app) with the adapter provided to me by Rivian

Ugh - did not know that. As were all aware VW owns Charge America - fingers crossed they adapt the TESLA standard as an option for Scout owners too!

Scout has announced that they are using NACS so will be interesting if the add/adapt existing charge stations
 
I don’t have an EV yet, but my wife and I have occasionally searched for chargers in the Colorado mountains—both in the smaller mountain towns and in between. There aren’t all that many in most of the smaller towns, and almost none on the roads between the towns. Example: Leadville is a pretty popular town to visit both for the town itself (they have fun events there and some cool little shops/reataurants) but also as a jumping off point for some beautiful hiking and mountain biking and camping. But when you search on the map, the whole town has 6 chargers. 2 of them are at a hospital/medical center, and 1 is at a specific campsite and unclear whether you can use it without being at that campsite.
 
I've always though that Hayden or Winkelman AZ on 177 and 77 should have a charger. Yes Superior, Globe, Florence have some but they are all at least 30+ miles away.

Ton of great BLM land there and its 70 miles from charger to charger on road. Treehouse cabin route puts you 100 miles round trip without a charge. A stop in either Hayden or Winkelman opens up a ton of areas to take an EV there

EA has already stated that they are going to NACS. All EOM have stated they are switching to NACS, its just a matter of when. I know Ford is the first to into vehicle I believe 26. Tesla is constantly adding more, If Rivian continues to expand their Adventure network it would be great. Tesla could do majority of Urban areas while Rivian hits the rural/off roading areas.

In Alberta, Lake Louise and Nordegg would be well served by DCFC, especially Lake Louise (I can't imagine anyone investing in a charger in Nordegg in the next decade). I can cobble together a route from Calgary to Abraham Lake / Icefields Parkway in the summer with a couple 50kW charging stops in the Lightning, but in the winter there's some long stretches of remote road without a charger. And the L2 half way around the loop is seasonal (diesel powered site, summer only) so there isn't even a bail out option.

What I'm saying is, excited for the range extender! lol

LOL very true! I steal my wife's rav4 if I don't feel 100% confident in / happy with the forecast... Was using an InReach as a safety blanket as well, and now the new iPhone sat messaging is awesome!

We go from Wyoming to Saskatoon & Edmonton and up to Ft McMurry lots of vast emptiness between towns along the route we normally take

Next time we go up will be mapping chargers to get a feel for what’s available

We had a 58gal gas tank installed in the truck & have a inreach mini that was slow but always worked

Love iPhones satellite texting feature, really great safety feature

Also planning on getting a Starlink mini & some kind of suction cup mount for the moonroof & then we will have internet/wifi and voice calling
 
What is “far away”. Just curious on what people’s definitions and expectations are? Trying to build data for SM. Thanks
If the total distance (to/from) a trailhead to a nearest fast charging location is more than 200 miles, i would consider it too far. Recently i had a scare in WA-20 where i could barely get back to a tesla supercharger with 10 miles of charge to spare.
 
Many (most?) do, and there are a number of third party options (j+ booster, grizzl-e and others). Typically they come with some sort of adapter for a number of different plugs.
As far as my R1T goes, it did come with a portable charger (which I never use, since I have a L2 wall charger in the garage). Great to have it though and I keep it hidden under the false floor in the frunk... Just don't expect to be going anywhere fast if you plug it into a standard 120V outlet! LOL.


Getting the most out of your Portable Charger​

Standard equipment on every Rivian

The Portable Charger comes with every Rivian and can be used both indoors and outdoors, including during inclement weather. It packs neatly into its carrying case and stows conveniently in the front trunk.

Using the portable charger

The charger has an 18 foot cord and comes with a Level 2 adapter which plugs into NEMA 14-50 outlet. When using the included Level 2 adapter, the Portable Charger provides 7.6 kW. This means you can expect to regain about 16 miles of range per hour.


It also comes with a Level 1 adapter, which allows your Rivian to charge off of a standard 120V household outlet – just like the one used to charge your cellphone. When using the included Level 1 adapter, the Portable Charger provides a slower charge, around 3 miles of range per hour. It’s useful in a pinch, but likely won’t be your everyday charging solution.


While we recommend a Rivian Wall Charger for the fastest at home charging speeds, the Portable Charger can be used as the main charging device. If using the portable charger as your primary charging method, we strongly suggest installing a NEMA 14-50 outlet and using the Level 2 adapter.

Seamless app integration

The Rivian app will show your vehicle's charging status, charging speed and other relevant details, whether it’s plugged into the Rivian Adventure Network, a Rivian Waypoints Charger, a Rivian Wall Charger, a Rivian Portable Charger or any 3rd-party charger.
 
Would be great if more charging locations are added on the way to popular trailheads. Sometimes it’s very tough to plan some hikes which are far away from any charging station
The last time I drove from the Carolinas to Michigan to visit my Dad, I stopped in New River Gorge National Park to do a random middle-of-the-trip hike. I was thinking how nice it would be to go for a 30-40 minute hike while my truck charges. My dog would love that too. It doesn't necessarily have to be in National or State Park, but just any place where you can access public hiking/walking trails would be great for road trips.
