Should Scout adopt the NACS (Tesla) charging system

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

Ford recently announced that their EVs will start using the Tesla charging system (recently made open and renamed the North American Charging Standard) in 2025. With Ford changing to the Tesla plug, do you think other North American manufacturers should follow suit? I've charged with both NACS and CCS and, in my opinion, Tesla is winning in this arena. The plug has a much smaller form factor and is more durable (what Scout owner doesn't want durability?). It's also a much simpler user experience and is proving more reliable than CCS networks so far. I know VW owns both Scout and Electrify America, which is a CCS network, but NACS just seems like the better system. I feel like Scout owners will be happier in the long run. There will be some pain on the manufacturers' and networks' end but I feel like the EV-going American will be happier in the end and more loyal to the brands that prioritize the owner experience. What do you all think? Ford Just Made a Brilliant, Blindingly Obvious Move by Embracing Tesla Charging (motortrend.com)

Here’s a look at the NACS port on the Traveler. Of course, this can change before production but I just love the integrated 120-volt outlets. Brilliant.
Whether here or perhaps more importantly in the Trunk, Frunk, and interior, there's also a need for a 12vDC outlet to power the wide array of appliances and accessories that already exist in the aftermarket.

Agreed! I love the implementation apart from it being on the wrong side of the vehicle and that the door is motorized.

Apart from those two gripes it's great! It opens upward which provides a bit of weather protection, it's next to a light which provide illumination, it integrates the outlets which is just brilliant and why haven't other EV makers done that!?

Well done SM! Now just move it to the other side of the trucks and make it spring operated instead of motorized and it would be perfect!

I'm a fan of a global standard for EV charging connectors. No prefer if its NACS or other, just universal standard.

I agree wholeheartedly, why not just open it with the flick of a finger like most of my other vehicles do? KISS, even a spring latch gets cranky when filled with dusty dirt. OTOH, perhaps SM made it motorized as a security measure, perhaps to prevent pilfering of power?

So that rectangle between the NACS plug and the 110 outlets, is that a button? Or some weird port? And what’s that round hole on the far right?

Having taken several long road trips in my Tesla, I strongly recommend Scout work with them to get access to their infrastructure. I've never had a problem with their chargers. Can't say I had the same experience when trying to find a working charging station for my brother's leaf.
