Did you have a busy 2023? Yeah, so did Scout Motors. The Volkswagen Group-owned company tasked with reimagining and reviving the iconic International Harvester Scout as a lineup of all-electric off-roaders went on trademark binge in 2023 that netted dozens of marks pertaining to slogans, materials, and potential model/trim/package variants. It's highly unlikely that Scout Motors will utilize all of the trademarked names, but it does seem interested in preserving its right to do so and preventing others from snagging anything pertaining to its robust heritage.
While we don't have all the details on the reborn Scout,
to be produced at Scout Motors' South Carolina production facility and slated to go on-sale in late 2026, its success may rest on the heritage of the original Scout name—and by extension, these trademarked names. Even though die-hard off-roaders may cringe at the thought of their beloved,
rugged Scout models and trims reemerging as German-made EVs (given that VW's future products will be EVs, the Scout is no exception) over four decades after their demise in 1980, like Ford with its back-from-the-dead Bronco, VW sees great opportunity in the nostalgic nameplate. VW acquired the Scout name
in 2021 when Traton, its commercial truck subsidiary, merged with Navistar, the company that was created out of International Harvester's ashes.

by CarBuzz, the trademarked names include a combination of old Scout names that existed during its original 20-year run and new, unique names that were never part of Scout's lineage. It's likely we'll see a blend of old and new. Notice the heavy implementation of agricultural terms like baler, cultivator, forma, grade, harrow, harvester, hauler, reaper, scythe, swather, tellus (Latin for earth), and thresher. It may be noteworthy that eight of the names are trademarked in conjunction with Scout, such as Scout Hauler, Scout Reaper, and Scout Spirit. Are these particularly special?
We envision an entry-level classic Scout Harvester and variants like a performance-oriented Scout Reaper (
not this Chevy Reaper), a work-ready Scout Hauler, an overland-bent Scout Terra,
a camper-equipped Scout Travelstar XL, an all-America Scout Spirit, and an ultra-luxurious Scout Aristocrat. Obviously, time will tell how or if Scout sees fit to use any of these terms (especially the more specific ones like Scout 80, 800, and Scout II), although we sure hope the menacing Thresher, Swather, Scythe, and Reaper make the cut.
