Keep the weight down please

We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

    Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

It would be nice to see the new Scouts incorporate aluminum panels to help keep the weight down as we know weight kills range. My cheap Ford Maverick has a aluminum hood and the F-150 has a aluminum bed. It would help with customers in the rust belt as well! Keep it trim but strong is what I'm trying to say...

Saw an old Saturn on the road this past weekend (maybe the last one still driving??) and it was still looking surprisingly good with its plastic body panels. With sheet metal on most all new vehicles being comically thin, I wouldn't be opposed to plastic or composite panels of some kind.

Saturns always look goofy because the panel gaps are huge to deal with thermal expansion. Also, I don't think it's more cost effective than steel. Gigacasting seems to be the hot new tech for bodies.

Do you know if rust makes a vehicle lighter?

I guess at some point when all the body panels rust out, then you could have a lighter vehicle....

Well maybe no need to carry over this Scout legacy item to save weight on the new Scout.

So I upvote for a lighter Scout with 3D printed technology & lighter materials....
 
Saturns always look goofy because the panel gaps are huge to deal with thermal expansion. Also, I don't think it's more cost effective than steel. Gigacasting seems to be the hot new tech for bodies.
I had no idea if the gaps were due to being a crappy car or something else, haha.

I don't care for the gigacastings from an insurance cost and repairability perspective. Too many vehicles seem to be getting totaled when one of these huge cast parts are damaged, even minimally, in an accident.

That is the biggest issue with Gigacasting. Unfortunately, It's not going away. Toyota will be adopting it.

Don’t you still need carbon fiber to encase the graphene? My daughter’s archery limbs are cf over graphene-amazing stuff
Good question, I’m actually not certain. I know almost a decade ago they were using it somewhere on the Spania GTA and then BAC was working on graphene body panels for the Mono track car, but I really don’t know where it went from there.
