Things to Avoid

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.
Bringing this post back with the new members to chime in on issues they have had with their past vehicles so Scout Motors can avoid them.

The reason I was thinking about this one again was because of my wife's car and the issue she is having with her sunroof. We bought it new in 2017, so it's not that old, but we are having issues with water getting inside when it rains. The sunroof has a trough and drain system to get that water out; however, I'm finding out that those drains do get plugged up. After some Youtubing I found out that I had to take some different levels of plastic off in the firewall, find the small drain, and push some weedeater twine up through the drain to clear it. That worked....but only for a few months. It's leaking in the interior AGAIN 🤬

WHAT TO AVOID SCOUT MOTORS (ON A CABANA TOP)?
  • Make drain larger to minimize risk of plugging up
  • Make drain easily accessible to keep up on maintenance. Shouldn't have to tear apart firewall to stand on your head for access. I couldn't even see the drain on the top side
  • App scheduled push notification to remind owner to clean drain
  • With air compressor as an option, make a fitting to attach to the drain to blow it out easily
  • This is a place for engineers to step out of design alone and look at feasibility and easy of maintenance.
Excited about the cabana option, but a wet, musty smelling interior would be a huge disappointment!
Your recommendations fit right in with the promise of 80% repairability by the owner in their own driveway.

But I have a different opinion. We also have a 2017 with a sunroof, ours doesn't leak and I guess that's largely because we never open it. We also have a glass ceiling in our 2023. We tried opening both, and the glare, noise, and skin cancer threat were good reasons to forget they are there. Neither is ever opened. So my opinion is that they should be an optional accessory. In their place I would hope that the engineers would give us a roof system strong and weight bearing capable of carrying a decent load, like multiple bikes, full size kayaks, canoes,
Yes!!! I absolutely hate this with a passion on new vehicles. I completely agree with you, please don’t add this to Scouts. If you absolutely must add it, please give us the ability to disable it. I’m not aware of this being a mandate.

It’s even more irritating when you’re in a situation where you need to be quiet and it goes off…

Presumably a safety & security thing for when someone is distracted and jumps out to run their errand before properly shutting down. Understandable, but it needs a temporary override button. It's illegal to leave it running when you run into a store around here, but there are legitimate reasons. My Tundra does the same, but it's just two reasonable bells. It usually gets me when I jump out to remove branches which have fallen on our driveway. The 23 Tundra has a well designed disable button for the obstacle sensors in the bumpers which will go off for every tall weed that leans into the drive, and they get deafening when you drive into a hay field. The defeat only lasts until you shift or stop, and that's fine. It's located on the steering wheel right under the left thumb.

On my GMC Terrain, I can’t adjust at what temperature the seat heat comes on. It comes on automatically when the outside air temperature drops below 10c. It would be nice to be able to choose even a temperature range
On that note I would say same thing about heated steering wheel. Assuming if preconditioning the vehicle you could have steering wheel come on or at least if said temp is X then steering wheel heat is initiated

I’d like to stack on that again and say please also give us the option to have the other seats come on if we choose, not just the driver’s seat.

Has anyone mentioned rear windows that don’t go all the way down? 🤣
Like every chance I get! It would also be cool if the rear quarter windows vented. It would be even better if they rolled down but that is probably a big ask. I was hoping for the lift gate window to roll down, or at least flip up independently of the gate. But, it doesn't look like that is going to happen either. Of course, I am referring to the Traveler.

I am in agreement with ALL of this.

Ok, so for reference most of my vehicles were built before Y2K so understand I don't have a lot of experience outside of our 2024 Corolla and various rental cars but here is my HATED features list:

Corolla proximity detection automatic locks. Car unlocks every time I walk near it and most of the time I don't know it. I should at minimum have to touch a handle first.

No gear engagement without seatbelt on. I inspect large properties and get in and out A LOT while moving at 5 to 10 mph through parking lots. I don't want have to go through that effort every time.

Not being able to engage a gear with the door open. Again, navigating tight spaces where I need to see where my tire is not just my back bumper makes this tedious.

Nannies that can't be turned off for more than one start. I'm an adult and should get to choose my Nannie's to be on or off. This is also true for headlights, wipers, interior lights.... all of it.

Drive sounds.... maybe this is impossible thanks to the Nader state, but I find it annoying that a Honda civic is allowed to idle quietly by while an EV has to make some annoying science fiction sound. Especially if I am driving an EV through the woods or something. Stealth mode would be awesome.

All electric actuators. If I am camping on an electric budget I want as many things as possible to be manually adjusted/ opened. I can adjust my seats manually. I can exert the minimal force needed on a latch to open doors, tailgates, windows etc. please give me that choice even if electric everything is an option.

I noted the reveal had BUTTONS for hvac and volume control so sounds like it's not going to be an issue here but wanted to be sure it is clear I really dislike putting HVAC and volume on a touchscreen.

If it's possible please don't make the car have to be stopped and in park for navigation screen stuff. Especially when I have a passenger who is fully capable of assisting

Thanks!

Absolutely, I can relate to all of these as well. This is a very good list.

Oh.... 2 more.....

Please don't make the glass roof or a sunroof a standard feature. I've had enough car roof leaks in my life and just want a metal roof without openings over the whole top as an option

And last, please offer a dark color way for the interior that doesn't have any bright contrast colors or patterns. It really makes it difficult to use the vehicle as a work truck if I have to constantly worry about staining a light color interior.

In the 23 Tundra (Ltd package) the seats are both heated and cooled. I can't say I wanted it, but will admit to having enjoyed both. In Toyota's implementation there is an open plastic? framework for the cool air to circulate and a fan up near the neck that draws the cool air through that structured fabric. I don't like the noise of the fan, but cool is nice sometimes. That open plastic fabric layer seems to be the culprit behind many complaints on Tundra Forums about stiff seats. I find that if I turn them on high heat for a couple of minutes that layer softens and conforms to my spine nicely. Then I switch to cooling to set it for the trip; after it has set I'm most likely to turn off the cooling. Each seat has two tabs on the console for heat/cool. The Tundra implementation seems about right, and we have been promised heat/cool seats in the Scout EV models. Unlike the heated steering wheel which I need for arthritic hands I wouldn't want to pay much more for AC seats, but if we are going to have them, it would seem a simple line of code to have them start in a pre-conditioning situation. Whether they start at a) previous setting, b) based on outside temperature, or c) a level selected/stored in settings, seems like another simple line or two of code.

Maybe this doesn't happen in many people's lives any more, but back in the days when my daily driver / field vehicle for work was my 65 Scout 80, one of the great pleasures after a day in the mines or mountains was to find a farm pond, pool in a creek, or just some wet place to jump in and cool off or clean up. You could lock everything valuable in the Scout, put the key in a pocket or hidden place and wade in. My fob dependent Tundra won't let me lock the fob inside, but the fob has a slide out "key" that will lock and unlock it and then get wet (hiding the fob under a rock). Can we have a "key" that can get wet, so that we can minimize the weight on a hike, or hunting, or enjoy skinny-dipping in a mountain lake? Or let us back in if there's some glitch in the systems and power actuation goes out.
