Rethink Steering Wheel Design?

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

Let me just start by saying design is subjective.

I hope the steering wheel design is not final. I think a round wheel or a round wheel with flat bottom would be preferred by most folks. From a design pov, don't like the two spoke design either. I know its a throwback look but in combination with the shape of the wheel not aesthetically pleasing. Somehow makes me think of my dad's old Buick.

I don’t dislike it at all and really have no complaints at this point. For some reason though, the picture in the first post here just doesn’t really scream “tough and rugged SUV/pickup” if I’m honest. It could just be that picture though because I didn’t dislike it during the reveal.
Color is a factor in that, maybe? Seeing it without the details picked up, like the leather grain and the orange stitching, does make it look like lukewarm oatmeal. The photos that picked up those details made the picky design nerd part of me do internalized cartwheels (I have never in my life pulled off a cartwheel, not even as a little kid). The not-roundness of it has grown on me. At first I strongly disliked it and thought ew, it’s a gross “look, look, we’re in the future and doors don’t need to make sense, so what if all occupants burn to death because it’s not obvious that the emergency door release is hidden under a mat?” kind of design-change-for-change’s sake steering wheel. I’m realizing that it’s actually more ergonomic and in line with how the NHTSA recommends one holds a steering wheel in these our modern times.

Lukewarm oatmeal! 🤣 Thanks a lot for painting that mental picture for me. Yes I have to agree the it’s probably just the coloring in that specific picture that gives me the oatmeal gags. Makes me think of my Grandma’s old Town Car for some reason.

It person it has a more orangish clay color. In fact, it is called Clay. That rendering picture definitely is a lighter shade than reality. Lukewarm Oatmeal 😂

That sounds like a color that would look great in person! Looks pretty sharp in the other picture you added above. Which one did you like better color-wise?

I liked them both. But, I was probably partial to the Canyon (dark) interior. But, it all depends on the exterior color...the whole design for me. I would imagine that there will be more options and variations by the time they roll out.

I haven’t seen them in person of course, but based on all of the video and pictures I’ve scoured I basically have the same thoughts as you and liked the darker interior a touch more. Good point about exterior color as that could change my opinion on the interior color choice.

Edit: wait…no, I like the Clay interior better. Hmm. They’re both nice. Now I have to go back and look at the videos of each.

At reveal, the Terra had the charcoal gray leather with the plaid effect which made it awesome but still think the clay/saddle brown was nicer because the depth of color/character of leather just really warmed up the interior

From what I can see in pictures I think I agree. The plaid effect is awesome though, never knew I’d love something like that.
