Once Upon a Wench

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

So I have a wench on the front of my Scout strong enough to lift two Scouts chained together straight into the air. Hopefully I'll never have to do this!

But one time I was heading off the mountain in the late afternoon and I came around a bend to find a man "Chicago Jack" out of his vehicle holding onto a rope in an attempt to keep his ride from slipping over the side of this very step hillside. Heading up, he had dropped his back right tire off the edge and now was teetering on a few loose rocks.

I had my family get out of my Scout and I parked it in a fairly secure spot and ran out the steel cable. I was pretty sure that I could pull his vehicle back up on the road but not 100% sure. There was a chance that both of our cars would be pulled over the edge and tumble to their deaths. (There is a vehicle at the bottom of this massive slide that has always served as a firm reminder to stay alert)

So I had him stand where he was not at risk and, standing clear of my Scout, I hit the remote on my wench. We all breathed much better when his vehicle gave a lurch and started to return to the trail. Within a few minutes we were shaking hands with big smiles and sweaty brows and we said goodbye to Chicago Jack.

WOW! This is an amazing story, talk about impeccable timing, I'm sure this gentlemen is forever grateful for your presence and your willingness to save hime. This is an amazing image.

Well my grandfather would always tell me there was a fine line between bravery and stupidity. It took me awhile to understand this, I use to think alot of decisions I made were out of bravery but now looking back, it was the latter.
I think if it goes well, then it's bravery. If it goes sideways, then I think then it's stupidity. I only post my "bravery" experiences. No enough time to post the other kind!

First, great story! And that is certainly quite a bit of exposure on that road. It must have been a stressful situation, and its one I'm glad you and the other guy made it out of unscathed.

Second, I just have to point this out. Please keep in mind I mean no offense by this.

But because I'm an overgrown kid, this is what my brain first visualizes every time someone says they have a "wench on the front of their vehicle" (forgive my Microsoft Paint ineptitude).

To be clear, its because Wench, and Winch are different things, even though the words sound/are spelled similarly.

Wench == a young woman, a female servant, or a promiscuous woman. Usually referencing the medieval/pirate times. So someone like this.
Image

Winch: a hauling or lifting device consisting of a rope, cable, or chain winding around a horizontal rotating drum, turned by a crank or by motor or other power source

Aka, this.

Anyway, this probably just shows how juvenile my brain is. And again, no offense. I just wanted everyone to know what my mental image was as soon as I opened the thread :D.

Carry on, with your daily dose of levity now having been administered :).

Truth be told, I was hoping for the image that jumped into your head. There's a lot of competition for views on Forums and I wanted a "What the heck?????!!" curiosity about the title. But double truth be told, I thought both were spelled the same! A few too many bumps to the noggin I guess!

Well played. I fully approve of the technique.

I'm just glad I didn't ruffle any feathers, as I didn't want to be "Mr Pedantic Guy", while, also, wanting to point out the mental image that resulted, because words have meanings.

I, the seemingly only woman who seems to post here on the reg who does in fact identify feminist, get what you were trying to do there and you know what? I thought the same thing when I saw “wench.”

Can’t say that it hasn’t made me feel uncomfortable in the past few weeks to have seen things like userpics of headless scantily-clad bikini ladies showing up on the forums. That guy in particular seems to have disappeared, but frankly someone who thinks nothing of saying “look at what little regard I have for women as anything but sexy meat bags” so openly as a first impression sucks.

This up above does not suck.

Thank you for knowing the difference. 🫡

Thank you for speaking up.

At first I was a bit worried that I'd offended, but then as I re-read, I believe you're saying we're all good here? Is that correct? If not, I'll gladly take it down.

Admittedly, I can't help but giggle any time this comes up (my dad and I wheeled a Jeep Wrangler TJ back when I was a kid, and my mom would often make this mixup, and each time I'd joke about it with her, and in my head it was something like the above, or something like a boat figurehead). I tried to show what I was visualizing, but was also trying to keep it very PG, as I've been in many forums now, and always try to keep them very G/PG rated.

👍

Yes, we’re good. Was just elucidating (and releasing built-up pressure about 😅) what isn’t good. I am not known for my clear speaking and brevity and am seeing where what I said was kind of rambly. Trust me, was also thinking about pirate/ren faire type wenches. 🤣😂

I thought the exact same thing but as a person trying to be more polite and working on my patience level I refrained. I figure I have tons of typos (drunk instead of frunk on numerous occasions) so I’m just as guilty but the thread title made it that much funnier in my childish brain. Props for the visuals. I knew somebody else would comment and you took it to a much higher level than I would have/ prior to my reform that is!
