Brand new and could use some guidance.

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

Hey there everyone. I am just starting out a new build, this is my first restoration project ever. I am working with a 62 Scout 80. This will be a complete frame off from what I am gathering after doing a quick inspection. Here is what my plan is:

CPT 9" front and rears or D44s (haven't decided yet.
SBC 350
700r4
power steering coversion from Cherokee
4" lift and 35s on there
unsure if i should do a spring over or under
will likely run 4.56
column swap
complete rewire
new steering box

I am looking for any critique you all have for me as well as what else I should plan on for this build. I am brand new to doing this and have minimal experience. I do have a couple guy with quite a bit experience that are available to help. I am also in no rush to do this build. I have 2 sons that will help on this project with me. When I called to price out axles they told me i need to know things like pinion angles, driveshaft length, and a few other things. Given that this is my first build, this is all unknown for me. I appreciate all of the help and advice. I will be sure to post updates as I go.

Mine is a spring over conversion with Dana 44's. I like the setup with running 33's.

Sounds like a fun project. I think beyond what some on this forum might have to offer you may also want to check some other Scout forums that are geared more to original Scouts vs those on here that are more about the new Scout than the originals. I suspect there are plenty of people here who can provide you with forum/website leads. Want you to find the best folks to give you great advice for the best rebuild you can manage. I do hope you share progress photos of the project. Wish I could offer more but I haven’t rebuilt. I think the Dana’s and the 35’s are both great calls though
Good luck!

Best advice, ignore the cheerleaders, seek out the advice from the actual builders and critical thinkers. There are a few really great baby Scout builders... see what they do, emulate the bits that apply to your desires, and ask questions. Like the old carpenter thing.... ask thrice, weld once.

*You might be better off putting it on a Scout II frame and platform, thus giving you more beef, space, and better axles and disc brakes from the jump...
(Otherwise a 3/8" plate can just be frame welded so you can mount a Scout II box to your frame and get power steering that way, to avoid jeeping it!!)
