UWB Digital Key

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

More than anything else I want in a new vehicle, the one feature I care about most is Digital Key 3.0 or what Apple has branded as Car Key 2.0. All it means is my phone acts as the key using ultra wide band Bluetooth.

Please please please, make sure this car has this. I love physical buttons, but man do I hate having to carry my keys around. Not a fan of how ford has implemented this where they force you to use their app to lock an unlock. Needs to be passive where the phone is in the pocket, and I press a button on the door like a normal key fob and it just unlocks. Many cars have already implemented this and this is going to be a huge dealbreaker for me with what is otherwise a perfect looking car. Here’s the current list of manufacturers and it’s growing by the day: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_digital_keys_in_mobile_wallets

Also if this car is going to support CarPlay, then please support EV route tracking in Apple Maps. I currently drive an Ioniq 6 and its map system is just awful. Unless you build an absolutely uncompromising map system, please give users the alternative to use something built into their smartphone to be able to road trip with.

Perhaps but seems to be more prevalent these days

I honestly couldn't imagine living without Android Auto in all my new vehicles at this point. I just drove a rental car for two weeks without it, and the experience was absolutely terrible. Never again.

I'm with you on the hate having to carry key fobs in my pocket these days. I too love the idea of the phone doing the work; however, I am a bit more cautious of this approach unless the technology has or is going to improve. I purchased a lock (well known manufacture) for the front door of my house that was suppose to have the same approach of keeping your phone in your pocket and simply walking up to the door to unlock it. 7 out of 10 times it worked....but man were those 3 times it didn't work frustrating! We would have to stand at the front door, get our phone out, find the app, open the app, then be able to get the door to unlock. I swear that lock knew when we had a hand full of groceries. I think most of the time it was due to the app not running in the background for what ever reason. The family was happy to "upgrade" to a numerical combo lock. Maybe that technology has since changed??

An idea purposed a while back that I would still like to see either in phone cases, or watch bands for more reliability - https://scoutmotors.community.forum/threads/daily-driver-comforts.72/post-1141

SM added more physical controls to the vehicles for that exact reason. Keep the fob but offer the phone app as well. Easy enough and satisfies everyone

I want to clarify this, it's not just phone as a key, it's specifically UltraWideBand technology. This should make it more reliable, specific, and able to be used even with the phone dead for 5 hours (Apple). It also enables the same functionality on your smartwatch with UWB.

Never heard of UWB tech before, we do have iPhones so off to Google I go

We went from a 18 SRT Hellcat to a 24 Genesis & the tech difference was mind boggling, we had a separate tech run us through the car & setup and when we paired our phones we’re told genesis was not able to use iPhones to access and drive with but you could with android…….was so overwhelmed that went in one ear and out the other

Would love to use our phones as a key & now iPhone has satellite messaging when unable to connect to cell service

Also looking to get a Starlink mini and run it in the car on roadtrip’s

A downer for anybody who will have a Terra and a Traveller

I don't care whether or not my phone can act as a key. I often take my vehicle to off-road locations to hike or run. I'm not bringing my phone with me. I leave it in the vehicle. If I'm running, the key is hidden somewhere on the vehicle. I would do the same thing with the Scout, so a physical key fob is a must, as long as it's not one of those thick ginormous key fobs. Alternatively, one of those door lock combo key pads would work so I didn't have to hide my key somewhere on the vehicle and can leave my phone in the vehicle.

And, don't make it for iphone and then jam the Android support in. Do both independently so they both function well.

Agree but please no keypad. They look so bad in my opinion. Sportsman club I belong to uses mag card reader so I just keep it in my wallet. Walk up to door, swing the caboose toward the door and it unlocks. Something like that would be an option so we don’t have to rely on phones

Agree, I don't want to rely on a phone to open the door. I'm not a huge fan of the look of the keypad, and would actually rather hide me key on the vehicle if I'm going out for a run. I don't need to lose the key or my phone while I'm running, which is why they don't come with me. So, an option that isn't a keypad or phone would be worth a good discussion.

I believe the Mach e originally came with a single fob reasoning that, since folks could use their phone as a key they didn’t need 2 fobs. Wasn’t too long before they backtracked and had to agree to provide second fobs because phone was so unreliable.
