Traveler spare tire carrier - other locations?

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

Might Traveler offer means to carry spare underbody, like Terra? Or perhaps mounted/standing to one side inside the vehicle?

I'd prefer to completely remove the swinging-gate carrier and have the split tailgate unobstructed. Better fit in garage too.

...I've seen elsewhere that swinging-gate carrier is expected to be an option. Love the split tailgate on my 2004 XC90, hooray.

I too like the idea of having options for this. I like the look and function SM has done so far with this, but two downfalls I see are: 1) three steps to put groceries in the trunk (work around is use frunk). 2) when parked next to cars while tailgating the tire off to the side would be in the way and potentially stick out in the driving lane of the parkinglot as well if you were wanting to keep it all open for tailgating. I would love to see the option to put it underneath, or on spare tire carrier. Sure there just isn't room for that though 😒

Standard tire mount option is under vehicle.

It’s too bad the tire rack can’t go up or down with the upper and lower tailgates. Up would be more out of the way when you’re putting stuff in or out or when you’re parked tight. Down could be used as a platform to extend the tailgate and make a big table out of it. I have no idea if any of that is structurally possible though.

I’m 99.9% sure that was for both. Maybe Jamie or one of the guys at event can verify I’m correct
I'm thinking its likely for both, like you.

What I am unsure about, is if it applies to the harvester option on either.

I've said before, but will say again. The Traveler with tire carrier addon is too long to park where I have access (the concrete bollards in front of the water heater reduce the garage space to ~204in).

I'd prefer under the vehicle (or, uh, magic). But I'd also at least like it to be an option to store it inside the rear hatch ala my current jeep.

Not my image, but you get the idea.

Which means I'd love to see options for 3 places I guess. Under the body, swing out carrier, and inside.

I agree with this post. I am in love with the Scout Traveler and placed my reservation right away as soon as I found out about it. I am glad that there is a clam shell rear tailgate but the one thing that I hope that can be optioned is to delete the rear spare tire mount so that accessing the rear tailgate would be much simplified and practical. The spare tire perhaps could be mounted underneath the rear?

The Harvester option might make it difficult to mount a tire underneath (assuming the Harvester is indeed rear-mounted). That would leave inside, frunk, or external as options. Underneath should be doable with EV-only models.

If I remember right my Dad's 79 Scout had the spare mounted internally, like this. I like that idea... Just would want a way to easily dismount if I needed to pick something up and anticipated using the extra space.
