Towing Behind Motorhome - Flat Towing

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

As a Motorhome owner and active traveler, the field of towable SUV and pickups is narrowing with every model year. The electric models of any brand are typically not towable. While this may seem to be a simple process of disconnecting power to the drive motors allowing free-wheel operation, apparently it gets more complicated than that. The ideal situation would be to generate recharge power to the batteries while being towed behind the motorhome. Arriving at the destination would yield a full charge or close to it. The key is to make the transition from "tow mode" to "drive mode" simple, easy to convert, and would not require removing, installing, or disconnecting any hardware. Electrical connectivity to activate brake, directional signals, and body lights from the motorhome is required. Currently JEEP is the only vehicle close to the SCOUT lineup that is towable without any modification. I urge you to seriously consider the "towable all 4 down" option on both SCOUT platforms. The motorhome market will love you for it.

Keep in mind the traveler is the size of a Yukon. Not questioning your abilities to tow but thats a large vehicle to tow behind a motorhome. The Jeep might be more ideal as size goes. My early years of working at a large campground I never saw a vehicle this size pulled behind a MH. But you do you.

It depends on the motorhome. I see RVs on our local highway flat towing full size pickups and SUVs (think Tahoe) quite frequently. Even Class Cs these days often have up to 8k lb tow rating. The setups I see are usually hauling either mountain bikes, dirt bikes, or a quad in the bed of the truck. I do however agree that the Scouts will be heavier than an F-150 with a quad in the bed. I would also argue though that these diesel pushers for example would likely not have an issue with a Scout as they are typically rated for 10k lb or more. Same with the Super Cs; they are typically in the well over 10k lb tow rating with some all the way up at a mind-warping 40,000 lb tow rating.

Please don’t get me wrong, I’m certainly not arguing - just saying there are a lot of variables, a ton of different motorhomes, and even more use-cases out there so I think flat-towablility should be on the table for discussion.

There aren't any EVs that I know of that have the capability to be flat towed. It would be amazing to not be restricted to the Jeep/Bronco ecosystem or have to tow a trailer behind my motorhome.

Competition breeds innovation so who knows what might happen if more companies jump in. Probably the biggest thing working against Scout Motors in this area will unfortunately be sheer weight. The weight of an EV will already eliminate it as an option for a certain portion of the RVing public depending on:
A. The tow capacity of the motorhome
B. The final weight of the Terra and Traveler

The biggest barrier to flat towing is whether the motors can be disconnected from the wheels via a simple button press or other straightforward mechanism. And most likely you'll need a towing capacity of around 7-8k pounds.

@J Alynn there are several motorhomes on the market that I'm sure can pull the little ol Scout around. I think of this sort of vehicle with most of the RV posts that I see on here.
