Scout concepts on Jay Leno’s Garage

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.
Everyone Jumps to conclusions and starts to drop their reservations, instead of saying it's still only in concept form, testing is still happening, R&D is still going on a lot could change in 1 1/2ish years.
Completely agree. I made my reservation in the first hour and those first dimensions that came out had the Traveler at 91 wide and honestly I freaked out. Everyone was saying as big as a Hummer. Thankfully I didn’t cancel and the updated dimensions were totally fine. I’m keeping my reservation until I can actually order one. Things change and at this point the only thing I think that could keep me from following through is if the price gets raised substantially. Other than that I’m all in. I have already named her. Ha!

Let's wait and see what the final tow numbers end up being. This is still fluid and the teams are still optimizing a number of things.

@chucchinchilla the current mules testing don't look like Audi Q6 e-trons. It is pretty hard to hide the big frame rails under anything VW Group makes (well except maybe the Crafter!).

Lastly, it is unfortunate that the concept vehicles are noisier than we like, but that is a direct result of the very basic drivetrain designed to move them on and off trucks and onto a show stand/display area. This isn't indicative of how our production vehicles will sound at all. Just to clarify.
Thanks Jamie for the update! Hope to see those prototype mules driving around.

I think anyone who has been around prototype vehicles knows this and won't judge based on that video. I worked for Ford Motor Company for 41 years and have been around a lot of prototypes, some had no powertrain; they were pushed on/off show room floors. The fact you could drive yours around was pretty cool. Big difference between prototype & mule.

RIP your notifications whenever new info drops lol.

I really do hope Scout can get the tow rating on Traveler Harvester up to 7k. That’s enough to tow a small camper or car hauler with a bit of margin for other cargo.

So is that a hint that test mules might be running around Europe disguised as VW Crafters or similar ? ( i.e., something the size of a Mercedes Sprinter or Ford Transit).

No, even the Crafter would be extreme. I don't believe we have any mules on public roads yet. Testing has been limited to proving grounds.

Alright, so I watched the video and yeah, the Traveler looks awesome rolling down the road. Love the design. And look, it's a prototype, so the road noise? Totally get it, they'll fix that before it hits showrooms.
Thing is, that Terra towing capacity? Major let down. Honestly, that's a dealbreaker for me. I don't tow cross-country or anything, but I definitely need to pull more than 5,000 pounds. So, looks like I'm gonna switch my reservation to the all-electric Terra instead. Sucks about the towing, but still psyched about the truck overall.

I think the EREV Terra will be able to beat the EREV Traveler, so I would wait until that is specifically characterized. Because the 2k drop that we now know in the Traveler should only result in a ~7k towing for the Terra. But again we just need to have a definitive engineering answer, rather then answers that are not set in stone yet

When they mentioned the 5k towing with the Harvester he was talking about the Traveller, I don't think he meant for both so I would expect the Terra with the Harvester to have more towing then the Traveller with the Harvester. I think it needs to be clarified more in the future and it will. Though, I don't really care about towing that much since I am coming from a Wrangler with a 2.5k lb towing limit so 5k towing is still a big upgrade. Also I am happy with the use of an LFP battery for the harvester models so maybe the harvester models and the pure EVs will start either at the same or close to the same price.

Great video. Glad to hear more nuggets of info. Here are the highlights for me:
  • 800v architecture
  • Charging up to 350kW
  • Range extender battery: LFP
  • 240v outlet (really hoping its at least 30-40 amps)
  • Vehicle will charge while parked using the gas engine
  • Designed with repairability ease/cost in mind

This was like the 10th thing the company has shared that makes me love the decisions they're making. For those dissapointed at a 5k tow capacity on the Harvester Traveler, two things to consider

1. The original Scout 2 could never comfortable tow that much at highway speeds. Even just around the yard, I pulled a 5k camper and it was heck! Plenty of power, but the chassis dynamics were garbage for heavy haul. That said, our family built and ran two businesses for two decades on the back of a Scout 2, towing a 2-3K trailer. I think 5K gets you a small travel trailer and realitically will be good enough for almost everyone. I do hope the Terra can tow a little more. I suspect this rating is based on the fact that while towing, you need the battery and harvester power to make any kind of decent range and the harvester wouldn't keep up while towing 7k at highway.

2. Capability=Cost. These forums are full of people warning the company not to get to high on the price, I think they are planning an AMAZINGLY capable vehicle for even 20K more than they're planning to charge, but there is a limit to how much batter/engine/features you can provide for a dollar. If the trade off is that the limit is reduced 2K, I think that's a great trade off.

Honestly, most people buying a 1/2 ton SUV should not be pulling more that 5,000 lbs over the roads. If you are, you should already be in a a 3/4 ton something.

I pulled a 5,100 lb travel trailer with a gas 1/2 ton SUV rated for 7,300 and it was "fine", but I would NOT have wanted to actually pull something weighing another ton behind that 5.3 engine. I bought a 1 ton diesel fo the heavy trailering, but 5,000lb is awesome for adventure camping, hauling a utility trailer, hauling a trailer with landscaping equipment/etc.

Excellent points. Very well said.

So nice seeing it move under its own power. People in the comments seem to not understand that the powertrain in the concept is small and its used to move it around on and off the car hauler. They all are complaining about the gear whine. It looked like it was still hauling ass on that roadway probably at-least 35-50 mph
I think it was noted at reveal that battery was good for about 35 mph but not for long so guessing Jay put it through its paces
