Scout as an EV

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

As soon as I had heard that the scout was coming back, I was super excited. I have always thought that they were neat after I saw a picture of one that my grandpa had. I googled the new scout as soon as I had heard but immediately was disheartened to learn that it’s an EV. Why take a rugged American vehicle like the scout and dishonor its legacy by bringing it back as an EV. No electric vehicle will ever stand the test of time. Nobody will ever own a restored EV that belonged to their grandpa or dad. This is just another vehicle being made that is trying to use the successful, recognizable, former name of a once tried and true vehicle and completely bastardize it and turn it into something completely dissimilar to the original product.

It’s great that in this currently free country you have the absolute choice to not buy one. Knowing there are well over 50,000 reservations with roughly 2 years to go I’d say SM has actually been successful to this point. Thanks for sharing your freedom of speech!

My great grandpappy took my great grandmammy by horseback to the saloon every Friday night, despite the tumbleweeds, rain, sleet, dust devils & packs of wolverine. Grandpappy eventually came into some gold nuggets and bought a buggy for his horsies at the behest of grandmammy. At first he resisted then obliged. I think he longed for rugged rides in open air under the stars and he always had a hankering for my grandmammy to ride side-saddle or bareback to the saloon with him, alas, as fate would have it, the buggy saved them from a wild pack of badgers and hail stones one fateful night, prompting my own pappy to buy a Scout truck. The saloon still called, and Pappy made the same trip each week with my beloved mammy in the Aristocrat with no complaints. The Palominos and buggy didn't stand a chance, and the horseshoes wound up with the lawn darts in the pasture - as far away from the stable as you could git. Truth be told it was high time to put them out to pasture anyway. I long for Pappy's ole Scout to this day, but alas he parted ways with her - just prior to me being privy to bridle her on my own, and she slipped away... Now my kids have pestered me beyond reprieve for an electric vehicle. Come hell or high water they want a Scout and they demand that she be electric... I'll be damned if I am ever seen within the confines of a Tesla, but this new Scout looks like the goldminer's daughter in a bikini. It might just be better than Polka Dot the Palomino, better than Polka dot with a buggy, and maybe even better than Pappy's Polka dot - the Aristocrat. Only time will tell...

I didn’t know that about your grandpappy. Thanks for sharing!

I do enjoy that freedom. It just kills me, that it is so rare for an auto manufacturer, to actually listen to the kind of people that want to buy the car they’re selling. I’m all for an EV like a Tesla or a Rivian that is creating its own its image. But why bring the scout back and turn it into something that it it isn’t. I just think this is missing the mark and there’s a lot more potential for the scout; when this is just gonna get filed under a list of electric vehicles that rich people drive and you only see in the city.

No, Scout did their market research and found it what fits the Scout Community, And they have had a large percentage of old Scout owners return and put reservations down. They Know their market. Its 80% Owner repairable, and Family oriented just like the old Scouts.

I would venture to guess (looking way back over yonder) that had Scout survived to live beyond 1980 (and Hungry Like the Wolf by Duran Duran), they may very well have beaten Rivian to the electric truck party.

True and if they weren’t plagued with rust, and the UAW strikes, and everything else they were fighting back. Scout could have easily been the first EV off roader.

This is the point Scout haters never consider. Scouts would have evolved if production never ceased. Jeeps can be bought with 4 doors and a hybrid powertrain. Land Cruisers are hybrid. The G-Wagen is sold in both ICE and EV.

To truly understand the history of Scout one must recognize that they were technically the FIRST modern day SUV. They WENT first. The new tag line is “Scouts GO FIRST” and Scouts always come back. The idea is baked in completely to the idea that the original scouts were innovative in their time and completely multi-use. Now if you look at it from that point of view perhaps you can accept this has merit? If you dig into the knowledge on this forum you’ll learn that EV’s and EREV’s are out-pacing ICE sales. Not to mention if this vehicle is as capable as SM is telling us, can do 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and “fuel” costs are like 50% or less of regular fuel why wouldn’t you want it.
If you can’t see beyond the advantages, being it closed minded or tricked by media then you are missing out on a great opportunity.
I’m guessing 90% of us didn’t originally expect or want the Scouts to be EV. If you spend time here with an open mind you’ll quickly learn as many here have (myself included) that an EV/EREV is the ideal way to enjoy a new vehicle.
And hey-if you just like being a slave to gasoline and running out in inclement weather to refuel then have at it but there will be no pure gas/fuel Scouts being made.

You went on a rant lol but a factual rant, so is it really a rant?

So, exactly what J Alynn said. That is basically my path to reserving a new Scout. At first, I was truly disappointed when I heard the new Scout was to be an EV. My dad had a Scout 800, I bought a brand new 1979 Scout II that I still own. Scout being an EV just didn't "feel right". But this grandpa has settled into this group and come to realize this the right path for the new Scout. I knew after the reveal that with the harvester, I was willing to take the leap into the EV world. And to be honest, the more I learn from others that already have EVs and what Scout has to offer, I am just about convinced I don't even need the harvester option.

I'll come at this from the perspective of someone who has owned a Scout II and a Scout 800 which I still own and plow my driveway with.

I have never owned an EV, but have become convinced by their obvious performance advantages, lower cost of ownership, etc. My Tundra is about 6 years old and has been a great truck, but 14 mpg is killing my finances. With a solar array on my roof that produces more energy than I currently use, the economics are going to be even better when I get my Scout Terra BEV and charge it with free energy from my solar panels.

Others have made the point that if IHC was still making Scouts, the likelihood is that they would have innovated to keep up with current technology and would almost certainly be offering at least a hybrid Scout, if not a full EV model. The market, economics, performance advantage, etc is driving the shift to EVs. All the political rhetoric from Washington about drill baby drill will not put the genie back in the bottle. It will just put us at a competitive disadvantage on the world stage.

Jack my man have you ever driven a EV? Did you troll the Ford and Chevy EV forums as well? You think poor people would be buying a new Scout if it was a gas vehicle? Would it really be that much cheaper if it was a gas engine? This whole endeavor costs a lot of money. They are building a new fricking factory in rural South Carolina. The CEO is an incredibly innovative overachiever. VW and Rivian are involved. IMAO Scout would have not even made it this far if it was a gas vehicle.

I look at it as a business decision. If they had made an ice vehicle, they would have been in a very competitive market that is already highly saturated. Instead, they looked for a niche that was largely untapped. At worse, I can only say the size of that niche is somewhat yet to be determined. But it comes down to being a large fish in a small pond vs being a small fish in a large pond. Less fishermen, but a better chance of getting hooked with each cast.
