EV Sales Aren't Actually in Decline in North America

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

I've posted about this a couple of times but given how prevalent the idea that EV sales are on the way down is lately I felt maybe it deserves its own thread in order to discuss.

For those who don't follow the industry as closely as I do or don't have a statistical background, it may come as a surprise to hear that EV sales are actually increasing on an exponential growth curve! (It's actually a standard adoption curve but we're in the exponential growth phase of the curve at the moment.)

I know the media is widely reporting that EV sales are dropping as if it's a fact but those reports are misleading.

It is a false narrative and I can prove it!

Here is Canadian plug-in registration data and an accompanying graph to illustrate the point: https://www.cer-rec.gc.ca/en/data-a...10-percent-of-all-new-vehicles-in-canada.html

And since this is an American brand here is a similar look at US data with it's own graph: https://www.energy.gov/eere/vehicle...nual-new-light-duty-ev-sales-topped-1-million

As you can see, sales are in fact not in decline. They are increasing. Now of course we don't have full year 2024 data yet but the early data that has been released so far for both markets also shows significant year of year increases thus continuing the growth trend.

I can get into why there is a false narrative out there of a 'slowdown' in EV sales but this post is long enough already so I'll just leave it at that. Check the data for yourself if you don't believe me.

All I know is the ZEV I bought last year plummeted $20k in value! I suspect it does depend whether one is in a region, like California, where there's a good charging infrastructure.

Will the Scout adopt NACS? One grocery store about half an hour away has only Tesla NACS. The other almost equidistant store has Type 2. (The grocery store 15 minutes away has no charging whatsoever.) What will Scout use?

I can’t imagine based on every other major EV manufacturer jumping on board with Tesla charger, Scout almost has to go that way but knowing VW has big stake in electrify America who ultimately knows

The fact that your vehicle depreciated so much has more to do with that specific vehicle than the fact it's a ZEV. My ZEV has depreciated very modestly since I bought it two years ago but since I have no plans to sell I don't really care what the resale value is.

Are you not able to charge at home?
