Diesel Range Extender option please.

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

I think the rang extender is a great idea for any electric car right now. They have the ability to make this kind of modular. Offering a diesel option would give you likely more range from the same tank, and potentially a quieter and more durable motor. I love the idea of a scout that could travel the country sipping diesel and able to get fuel anywhere. And might not even need all the crazy emissions stuff since it’s a generator sitting at the same rpm and very small. Might meet requires more easily.

While I'd also prefer diesel, I suspect anything VW related won't go that route after the whole Dieselgate thing. Turned in both of my TDIs for good money back then.
Nowadays, diesels are more trouble than they're worth with DEF and all the regen crap. I've kept my tractors smaller to avoid this stuff as well.

They have regen & def on tractors now 😳😳🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 What fool thought that’s a good idea

A diesel would be more expensive, heavier, have a more complex and higher maintenance emissions system, and not quieter in any application I've seen.

So a pile of negatives. On top of that, one of the traditional virtues (torque) is irrelevant since it's not connected to the wheels.

So I think they will pass on diesel, just like everyone else.

It's not a good choice of range extender motors. Best bet is a simple, Naturally aspirated Atkinson Cycle gas powered engine.

While I do prefer my diesels (only slight issue is we don't get winter blend and we have had 2 hard enough cold snaps to cause temporary issues), I don't see Scout doing it. As already said, Regen and DEF make it too complicated for a lot of people. That said, my SxS, 2 Tractors, Skid Steer, Truck, Rubicon, and Golf are all diesel... FWIW, the farm equipment was all pre-DEF. I don't know if the SxS was small enough, or just pre regen. (Also have a 2 wheeled Diesel tractor). Hell, even my lawn mower is diesel...

Not sure the cut off size to avoid regen and DEF - and if it is modified if put in a vehicle. Lawn mower also avoided regen and DEF. I think it is 30hp. SxS is about the same size. 2 wheel tractor might be a couple HP less.

Main thing I like is stabilized diesel stays fresh a long time.

Well, it’s an exaggeration to say it’s a ”utopia”, but it is a great place to live.

I was being sarcastic, had family in San Francisco dating back to the 30’s, have/had a subdivision named for my great grandfather in the Riverside area, mom was in movies and lived in Hollywood & I’ve still got family in Calif and visit 2-3 times a year

Kalif has been destroyed, the reggae club in the Tenderloin I’ve gone to all my life was forced to close & the Tenderloin is way way worse than it ever was in the 70’s/80’s

I could go on for hours how bad it’s gotten with no end in sight

It’s a beautiful state, no question about it but….

Generally the tone in these forums has been respectful, polite and apolitical. Sorry if I misjudged that in this case.

You might be new here, I’d recommend lurking a while to get a sense of things. The generally positive tone and staying away from insults has lead to a positive experience and wide participation, with most of us learning a fair bit from folks we wouldn’t necessarily run into otherwise. It’s a refreshing change from most of the internet.

I am being polite, respectful and positive and trying not to go down the political rabbit hole

I’ve not insulted anyone

I’ve lived and traveled all around the world, lived in some very interesting and violent locations to very peaceful & respectful. It really hurts my heart seeing how bad California has gotten, how such a wonderful and once vibrant Tenderloin has turned into a 3rd world where I’m no longer safe at 3am

It would be wonderful to see high quality diesel like the rest of the world uses here, without any of the idiotic regen/pollution nonsense that has crippled the diesel industry & innovation so a small diesel electric vehicle could be a reality

Now, I know this isn’t true because you’ve tried to insult me a couple of times since you’ve joined. 😅

Okay, that’s your hot take on California. It may hurt your heart, but it’s still someone’s home NOW. You’re negging on someone’s home. Nobody is dumping on your home. That’s an opinion you can keep to yourself. Everyone else is talking about cars.

How is saying something is idiotic not negative? “Pollution nonsense” isn’t nonsense. It’s backed by years of study. If you choose not to believe that, I can direct you to some photos of car piles in Valencia, Spain from last week. Those were from flash flooding… the kind of weird weather caused by things like climate change caused by things like atmospheric pollution.

I doubt that diesel/biodiesel engine has been thriving because it’s not responsible based on what we know to be true. Burning anything makes carcinogens. The world is trying to deal with climate change and an increase in cancer diagnoses among young adults, of which I am one of those “young adults with weird cancer out of nowhere.” That ain’t helping. The Kyoto Protocol wasn’t a joke.

Serious issues only seem to become political when the facts don’t work with someone’s interests.

If I had insulted you, you would be well aware of it. I don’t mince word you are learning

Correct, the facts do not support your assumptions and personal feelings

Climate change 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Calling a dumpster full of garbage a beautiful piece of artwork does not change the fact it’s still a dumpster no matter what your feelings are. Next time I’m in Kalif let’s meet in the Tenderloin and you can tell me what we see is not real

Everything you own, purchase, eat, wear has at some point been transported by a diesel vehicle and without the thriving diesel transportation industry America would not be where we are today

Obviously I have hurt your feelings and triggered you by my utopia comment. I will work harder to be nicer so you don’t feel like I’m attacking you

Let's please leave any political debates for another platform elsewhere. I find it refreshing that this community has been a great resource and supportive of one another. Yes, we all have our differences, but let's do our best to keep things positive and constructive.

Thanks all!

Oops, my mistake, did not see your post

I’ll shut up now and try to color within the lines ☺️☺️

Great! I’m sure you’ll delete your reply to me, in that case. 🥰🥰🥰

A diesel range extender would solve a lot of concerns that people have about the harvester option. Diesel engines are undeniably better generators because of their low RPM, high torque operation. The engine needs to be powerful enough to charge the batteries sufficiently or there would be serious performance lost when the batteries are drained.

Pretty sure you claimed this before, and I pointed out, that it isn't really accurate.

1: For any given displacement, gas engines make more power, and are lighter weight, and torque doesn't matter to generator.

2: Not only that but diesel has extra complicated emission control requirements.

It's basically all disadvantages for diesel in this application.

Massive industrial engines get advantages from diesel, but for small generators, not really.
